"OLD NUMBER ONE"

ABOUT US

WWII Classic by Raul Morin

HISTORICAL BEGINNING                                         San Jose Chapter By Laws

The American GI Forum was first organized on March 26th, 1948 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Noting that Mexican Americans were being subjected to discriminatory practices in the areas of veterans benefits, education, employment, medical care and housing, a group of interested persons formed a group to issue complaints to authorities at various levels of government. This group was led by the honorable Dr. Hector P. Garcia a WW II Army veteran medical doctor. The dedication of the young doctor and the success acquired by his dedicated leaders and hard working members brought many wanted requests from other areas of the state where people wanted to organize American GI Forum chapters. Then the movement spread into neighboring states where many other veterans joined and helped the organization grow. Dr. Garcia gained national prominence organizing more chapters and fighting for civil rights and the ideals of the American GI Forum for all people.

As of August 13, 1998 American GI Forums of the United States were granted a Federal charter enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America.

WHEN WAS THE SAN JOSÉ CHAPTER FOUNDED?

The American GI Forum spread into California in the late 1950’s. The Santa Clara Valley Forum was founded on June 27, 1959. Later when some members left to start a chapter in the city of Santa Clara, the Valley Forum became known as the American GI Forum San José Chapter. Today it is the largest non-profit American GI Forum chapter in the western United States referred to as “Old Number One”
