The 16th of Septermber is celebrated in San Jose with a downtown parade and sponsor by the San Jose Mercury News and the San Jose Chapter of the American GI Forum dating back to 1983. The celebration commemorates Mexico's Independence and the event is often confused by US citizens with the Battle of Pueble, better known as Cinco de Mayo. Thousands of people come to the downtown area to view the floats, colorful costumes, marching bands, drill teams and assortment of decorated entries vying for first, second or third place as they march past the judges at the review Grandstand.

Dr. Hector P. Garcia, an Army veteran medical doctor, founded the American GI Forum of the United States (AGIF) on March 26, 1948 in Corpus Christi, Texas. The AGIF is dedicated to addressing problems of discrimination and inequities endured by veterans. Through the volunteer force of dedicated leaders and hard working members, the AGIF has broadened its activities throughout the United States by becoming a civil rights advocate for all people. By promoting greater participation in civil rights affairs, educational attainment, employment, equity in income, and health services, the AGIF has maintained a leadership role in many communities and has gained respect among all ethnic groups. The National Organization is composed of the Forum, Women's and Youth Chapters. Local chapters function under a regional and/or state structure. Elected officers from within the national membership compose the National Board of Directors. The AGIF provides a public forum that produces a viable channel of communication between the AGIF, its constituents and the public and private sectors.

Old Number One, the San Jose Chapter, and AGIF chapters across the USA endeavor to pursue and promote: Education, Youth Leadership and Motivation, Employment, Civil Rights, Legislation, Communications, self sufficiency and the development of communities. The San Jose Chapter has a long history of providing for the local community through its many programs aimed at enhancing the lives of our citizens. Proud of their record of service to this country, old members and new tackle the everyday challenges of an ever changing environment. This years festivities will be special and will launch the 16th of September Parade into a new Century. Parade entries will reflect the many accomplishments of the AGIF which include the proud tradition marked by the support of graduating seniors from schools, colleges and universities. Where there once was a scarcity of Latino Lawyers, Teachers, Engineers, Doctors, City Council Representatives and Mayors, the AGIF relishes its role in bringing about and/or contributing to positive change as we collectively usher in an eciting new tomorrow.
